Coleman won a 2007 Pulitzer in the music category for a jazz composition
titled "Sound Grammar." Considered a pioneer of "free jazz," he earned a
lifetime achievement award this year at the Grammys, where he was also
nominated for best jazz instrumental album. Conditions at the festival about 60 miles southeast of Nashville were hot and dusty this year. One fan died and officials were investigating whether drugs or heat played a role.
